For the second time this year, Danish KHR Architecture in collaboration with their German partner BBPlan, Ham- burg, has won a school construction project in Germany, Olympiastützpunkt (OSP) in Hamburg. This is KHR ́s third German school construction project in recent years and a fourth is about to be announced, also together with BBPlan, KHR ́s creative director and partner Janina Zerbe tells Byggeeksport.
Danske Ark and Schulbau. The background to the success goes back a couple of years, when KHR followed Danske Ark’s recommendations on how to better succeed in the German market, including hiring German-speaking employees and a German partner. But also pointed to German Schulbau, where Danish architects can present their experiences with school construction. KHR has done exactly that, most recently at the first Schulbau in Copenhagen and again at Schulbau next month in Hamburg. Berlin. The first school project won, Am Breiten Luch in Berlin, in collaboration with Renner Architekten in Berlin, which will be completed in 2025 and has a budget of DKK 325 million. Olympiastützpunkt. The currently won government and state-subsidized Olympiastützpunkt, Hamburg/ Schleswig-Holstein, in Hamburg’s Dulsberg district, is for the region’s top Olympic athletes. It involves refurbishment and new construction and is budgeted at €31.5 million.
– Competition in the German market is fierce, so we have deliberately chosen to concentrate our efforts on Berlin and Northern Germany. It’s great to see that the strategy is bearing fruit. It’s a great task in an international league that we’re proud to have won and we’re really looking forward to getting started. We don’t have anything similar in Denmark, and it will be both fun and challenging to create a center where top Olympic athletes can train, live and receive healthcare support, comments Creative Director Janina Zerbe.
The 16,820 sqm project includes everything from sports and swimming pools to athletes’ housing, a new elementary school, media center and underground parking. In addition, outdoor areas, including a number of outdoor sports facilities, will be constructed in the last of the project’s five phases. Before construction begins, the existing Aqua Hotel will be demolished.
