SCHULBAU Salon & Messe Hamburg will take place from 19 to 20 September 2023. In addition to various refurbishment and new construction projects, the programme will focus on the issues of digitalisation and sustainable educational buildings.

Renovation and new construction pressure:

Since there is an urgent need for refurbishment in many places at Hamburg’s now 473 schools, the annual budget for school construction has been steadily increased since 2011. In the 2023/24 double budget, 845 million euros have been earmarked for this purpose, which will be used to optimise everyday school life.

Hamburg’s educational institutions are currently attended by around 260,000 pupils. Compared to the previous year, there are 6,060 more children, which is particularly noticeable in the first classes. In addition, 4,726 Ukrainian children were distributed among Hamburg’s school classes last year, and a further increase can be expected this year. Therefore, not only the premises but also the staff numbers need to be adjusted. For this reason, the majority of the budget will be used for the construction of new and the renovation of old school buildings. To this end, 29 school sports halls, 21 classrooms and 24 canteens for the extensively used all-day provision are to be completed by the end of 2023. Furthermore, 542 new jobs for teachers will be created.

Another major topic is climate-friendly school construction, for which the use of heat pumps, automatically controlled heating systems, solar and green roofs is planned. These and other methods for energy reduction will be presented at the SCHULBAU Salon & Fair on 19 and 20 September 2023.
