Educational spaces must grow with the needs of students, pedagogical concepts and technical possibilities. But how can schools be designed to be functional and future-proof at the same time? At the SCHULBAU Think Tank Copenhagen 2025, Robert Grimm, Director of Delivery at BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), provides insights into this process. His lecture is dedicated to the interface between design and implementation and sheds light on how well thought-out concepts become reality.

From design to implementation: Architecture that works

Complex construction projects require a close integration of ideas and implementation. As Director of Delivery at BIG, Robert Grimm is responsible for project management, resource management and quality assurance across the entire portfolio. Schools and educational buildings play a special role in this. They are places of learning and at the same time spaces that shape the everyday lives of the next generation.

His expertise ranges from sustainable architecture to ecological construction methods and digital planning methodology. In Copenhagen, the focus is on how these aspects interact in school construction and which strategic decisions facilitate successful implementation.

Robert Grimm from BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group: Architecture with international experience

After studying architecture at the Bauhaus University Weimar and interior design at Oxford Brookes University, Robert Grimm gained extensive experience in various international architectural firms. He worked at Dietmar Feichtinger Architectes in Paris, MVRDV in Rotterdam and Leeser Architecture in New York before joining BIG as a senior architect in 2017. In 2021 he was promoted to associate and since 2023 he has been leading the implementation of complex construction projects as Director of Delivery. His expertise in the field of sustainable development, ecological construction and technology integration shapes his work as much as his strategic view of the processes behind architecture.

His projects at BIG include the PARC educational facility at the Sorbonne University in Paris, whose development he oversaw right up to construction. With XWork and Vivaldi, he was responsible for two office buildings in Boulogne-Billancourt. As project manager, he also managed the construction of the Simone Veil high school and the Ostend train station in Belgium. His experience in educational, infrastructure and administrative buildings makes him an expert for demanding architectural projects.

Think Tank at SCHULBAU Copenhagen 2025

Which concepts are suitable for the educational building of the future? How can sustainable materials, flexible structures and modern learning environments be integrated sensibly? These questions are the focus of Robert Grimm’s lecture and the subsequent workshop on June 3, 2025 at the SCHULBAU Think Tank Copenhagen.

The event takes place in the Skabelonloftet in Copenhagen and brings together architects, planners and decision-makers from educational construction. In addition to lectures and workshops, it offers space for professional exchange and new perspectives.

An event for all those who don’t just want to build schools, but also want to think further about them.
